Average Ratings Rose. More Than Half of Apps Lost Ground.

Utility mobile maturity is no longer defined by whether an app exists. Across 45 utility apps and 90 app store listings, this year’s data shows ratings rising on average, while the gap between leaders and laggards, and between iOS and Android, grows harder to ignore.

trends shaping utility apps next and how you can enhance your utility app

“The strongest app roadmaps create momentum in two ways: delivering quick improvements that customers can feel right away, while also investing in the larger capabilities that will meaningfully change the experience over time. Utilities should not have to choose between short-term progress and long-term transformation.”

Key Insights from the 2026 Benchmark

Drawing on an audit of 45 utility mobile app experiences, this year’s report reveals where the utility app market is gaining ground, where it’s losing it, and what separates the leaders from everyone else.

  • Ratings Rose on Average, But the Market Split

Combined app store ratings in the matched set rose from 3.80 to 3.86. But the median fell, and 22 of 40 comparable apps lost ground year over year. Growth on average masked a market that spread out rather than improved together.

  • The Same App Feels Like Two Different Products

Apple ratings average 3.91; Android averages 3.77. Comparing the same app on both platforms, iOS rates higher in 26 of 44 pairs, and Android in only 17. Customers don't know which codebase or platform caused the friction. They just experience it as a brand problem.

  • Frequent Releases Don't Guarantee a Better App

Apps with 11 or more Apple releases in the past year averaged a 3.60 rating — lower than apps that shipped less often. Release cadence alone is a poor measure of app health.
